J. M. Liles, also known by JJ, is a Minneapolis-based visual artist, writer, and community organizer whose work confronts systems of power through unflinching explorations of identity, resilience, and social critique. The are also owner of local Minneapolis business The Bone & Root. As co-president and co-founder of H.E.X., they help guide the collective’s vision of fostering bold, experimental, and politically charged art.
Liles works across mediums—poetry, assemblage, collage, and painting—often weaving personal history with cultural critique to create pieces that are both intimate and confrontational. Their writing has appeared in literary journals and anthologies, and their visual art has been exhibited in local and national spaces. Dedicated to collective care and radical imagination, they bring years of experience in community building, event organizing, and arts advocacy to H.E.X., ensuring the group remains both a creative and supportive force.
